Indeed, in a letter to her beloved sister Cassandra, Jane wrote – ‘An extraordinary thing happened today. A penguin arrived at my side despite the hot weather. I said how dreadfully sad I was to leave our quiet home and he replied how dreadfully sad he had been to leave the South Pole! We are both truly fish out of water, I exclaimed. And he replied – Considered rather lucky in my book!
